CRANBURY — Actor Tracy Morgan was critically injured when a truck collided with the van that was carrying him and four friends home from a comedy show on the Turnpike early Saturday morning. One of them, 62-year-old James McNair, was killed in the crash.

Royale Watkins, a Los Angeles-based comedian who said he had performed in New York clubs with Morgan and McNair, said McNair played a crucial role in the comedy community.

“There may be guys like Tracy who get the fame and notoriety, but you have people like Jimmy Mack who have kind of energized and fueled cats like Tracy and kept them going on the road,” Watkins said.

Morgan is known for the decade he spent on “Saturday Night Live,” as well as the self-effacing character he played for seven years on the show “30 Rock.”

NJ.com users expressed their condolences to the families of the victims.

ProudMom said:

Devastating. Heart felt condolences to the family on the death of their loved one. Prayers and best wishes on a full and speedy recovery to Tracy Morgan and all injured. Strength and love to the families.

Some of Morgan’s fellow comedians and friends took to Twitter to send him messages of support.

In the comments feel free to leave your own condolences for McNair’s family or comments about your favorite Tracy Morgan moments. Was it as Tracy Jordan on “30 Rock,” or maybe his sketches as SNL animal expert Brian Fellow, or when he spanked Shaquille O’Neal that you remember the most?
